Greek Performance Video
The movie we watched on Greek performance was really interesting. While I don't necessarily think that theater emerged from one place... I think that different cultures around the world all had their own variations of theater and story telling, the Theater of Dionysus was definitely ahead of it's time both theatrically and architecturally. But more than either of these aspects, one line in the movie really spoke to me. It said that the festival was a time that broke down hierarchies between men and women, old and young, rich and poor, etc. The festival was a time where boundaries were allowed to be crossed. I LOVE this. I think that this is was theater is all about. Theater has the capacity to be an incredibly daring and bold place. Some of today's theater strays from truly meaningful works, however I believe that the root of ALL theater is art that speaks to people and sends a powerful enough message that people care enough to keep watching or keep reading.
