The first thing that struck me about the Cherry Orchard film
was its soundtrack, or rather, lack thereof. Rather than a fully orchestrated
score, most of the background noise in the film is ambient. This decision
illustrates that the filmmakers know how to handle an adaptation from stage to
screen. Clearly they realize that certain conventions of film, in this case an
extensive orchestral soundtrack, are not necessary in adapting drama, as they
are rarely used in staged productions. As such, the actors’ performances are
centrally relied upon to carry the dramatic tension. Unfortunately, the acting
is more than a little too theatrical, making it hard to feel sympathy for
certain characters. On the whole, however, the film is a well-done and
respectful adaptation.
